Marcus says, “If you want to blow the budget a bit, I recently stayed in Bangkok and can really recommend the much-talked about Shangri-La Hotel. I had heard about this place from someone at work and knew it was meant to be good, but the location, service and overall quality really improved my trip.
Perched on the Chao Praya river, you can sip a sundowner watching the river traffic slowly winding down at the end of another busy, energetic day in south-east Asia’s most colourful city. The tennis courts are good if you like to work up a sweat in the tropical humidity and the Thai food at the Shang Palace restaurant is world-class and beautifully presented. It’s a big hotel so there are lots of nooks to explore and lovely tropical gardens to just chill out in.
The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market nearby is fascinating as it is about as far from pushing a trolley around a supermarket as you can get. The Skytrain also has a station very close to the hotel and is great fun to ride and people watch from. The Grand Palace is a must and a little known delight is the massage school at the famous Wat Po temple with its reclining Buddha. They give you a proper traditional Thai massage (lots of stretching!) in serene settings that makes you feel superb afterwards.”
