He’s eaten his way around seven countries and advocated the joys of fish sauce at every corner of South East Asia, so if the BBC series Rick Stein’s Far Eastern Odyssey hasn’t made you hungry, you must have watched in black and white with the sound turned down.  Even without the whole five senses, Rick’s roaming around the markets of Thailand and the kitchens of Kampot were enough to make me hungry while I was sat there eating!

Of course, his book is out now, so we are all able to recreate the tastes and smells of the warm tropics at home, but for those who really want to taste the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the Far East, there is nothing like the real thing!  Make sure you pick a resort or hotel that offers a cookery course, and get out and about and eat the most authentic way for next to nothing, at the street stalls and food markets.  It is also really tricky to find genuine ingredients like palm sugar and fresh turmeric in the UK so be sure to leave room in your suitcase for such goodies.
