Should Building Development Delay Your Trip To Dubai?

Will the building work ever end? That was the question on my mind during my latest visit to Dubai in March 2009.  Visitors have become accustomed to the quite awe inspiring rate of construction in this city over the last few years, and in a perverse way, that’s almost become part of the attraction….

It sounds silly to say it, as in many other areas of the world leisure visitors would be screaming about developments spoiling their holidays.  However, it’s the sheer scale of this development  in Dubai (you can see some of it spread out when staying at The Address for example)  that captures onlookers and can put you in some sort of awed trance.  But still -holidaying in what must be the world’s biggest building site?  Sounds awful!

Trust me, it’s not.  Strangely it does not spoil a stay in the slightest.  If you are lying out on the beach you will not be disturbed by noise as the building works, whilst they are visible in almost every direction, don’t seem to emit that brain shaking pile driving noise you’d expect.  A great game in fact is counting the cranes precariously perched atop the buildings, soaring upwards into the sky.  Ummm-   99 and counting – time for another game!

Anyway, back to the question of will the development ever stop?  The answer appears to be yes by general consensus.  The people who seem to know these things are all quoting 2012 as the “finish” date.  Many developments (to the untrained eye at least) appear to have passed beyond the embryonic stage do seem to be nearer completion, so 2012 does seem feasible.  Also I guess there is a strong case for stopping as supply of new luxury accommodation and hotels starts to outstrip demand, especially in these times of economic crunch.

So what would I advise?  Should you wait until the alleged 2012 finish date to visit if you have not been to Dubai so far?  Absolutely not!   Go Now!  It won’t intrude on what will be a great holiday and if nothing else, it will be great to say “I was there when they were still building this world metropolis” in years to come.
