Famous for being a friendly, welcoming city with plenty to do and see, choosing what to leave in and leave out of the itinerary can be tricky for a visitor new to Bangkok’s fast pace and frenetic atmosphere. Here is a run-down of the top five things to consider when planning a sightseeing stay in Thailand’s capital…

1. Spend some time in the park - Bangkok has so few really open spaces, especially of the public park variety. The largest, and oldest, is Lumpini park.  It opens at 6am and is popular among joggers and other sports enthusiasts early in the morning.

2. Visit the Khao San Road – with its excellent people watching credentials, wealth of super-cheap restaurants, bars and night-clubs, street markets and shops, this back-packer mecca is a great place for a brief, eye-opening visit.

3. Stay in the business district – This is great area to stay, even for leisure travellers, as it is at the heart of the city, close to Lumpini Park and has a bustling night-market.  There is a choice of high quality hotels to choose from, including the long-established five-star Dusit Thani Hotel. It is ideally situated for exploring the city with the skytrain and underground system both very close.

4. The riverside is a great location -  Most major tourist sites in Bangkok are just a few steps away from the river, and after spending a hot day tramping around temples, the river really cools you off in the evening.

5. When in Thailand, visit Chinatown - Bangkok’s vibrant Chinatown district runs along Yaowarat Road from Odeon Circle, where a huge ceremonial Chinese gate unmistakably marks the entrance, up to the Ong Ang Canal, which marks the outer boundaries of the royal district. An easy place to explore on foot, in fact there really isn’t any other way. Take in the sights on a walking tour, which also leads you through the Indian market at Phahurat and the flower market further on.
