As one of the most famous symbols of Rio de Janeiro, a trip to Corcovado, the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer, is an absolute must! Many choose to take a taxi as they think it’s the best way to get to the top – but think again! Opt for the train as the views are delightful and more importantly, your money is used to maintain the biggest urban forest in the world: the Tijuca National Park, which you pass through. As an electric train, it’s also far more eco-friendly as there’s no pollution.
To get there, go to Rua Cosme Velho 513. Buy a ticket at the Cosme Velho station where the small red cogwheel train leaves every 30 minutes. Along the steep climb to the top, you get a close-up look at the thick vegetation, butterflies and birds as well as stunning glimpses of Rio through the tree tops. When you finally get to the summit, the view is nothing short of heavenly: Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Botanical Gardens, the Jockey Club, and the Lagoon. Simply breathtaking!
